About this course
This course takes you from the basics of software testing to modern, automated browser testing with Playwright, and shows how AI tools can help you design and maintain tests without taking over your judgement. You first learn what good testing looks like: test cases, bugs, risk and the testing life cycle. Then you automate it, using TypeScript and Playwright.
AI is treated as a helper that must be checked. You use it to draft scenarios, create test data and read failures, and you learn where it goes wrong, for example by writing confident assertions that check nothing.
What you will be able to do
- Design test cases with techniques such as equivalence classes and boundary values, and write clear bug reports.
- Write reliable Playwright tests in TypeScript, using resilient locators and automatic waiting.
- Organise tests with fixtures, hooks and the Page Object Model, and run them in parallel across browsers.
- Test APIs alongside the user interface, and combine both in one test.
- Use AI assistants to draft test ideas and data, then review and correct what they produce.
- Run tests in a CI pipeline, read the reports and traces, and fix flaky tests.
- Check pages for basic accessibility problems as part of the suite.

Projects you will build
E-commerce checkout test suite covering sign-in, cart and payment-form validation, run against a practice site.
Data-driven registration and login tests with positive, negative and boundary cases.
Combined API and UI test: create data through the API, then check it in the browser.
A framework built on the Page Object Model, with reports and a CI pipeline that runs on every change.
Accessibility and visual-regression checks for a sample site.
Capstone: a complete test framework for a chosen web application, presented with its reports and a short risk assessment.
Before you start
- This outline starts from the basics: manual testing, then JavaScript and TypeScript, are covered in the first modules.
- Helpful but not required: experience as a manual tester or with Selenium lets you move quickly through the early modules.
- Entry requirements and the AI tools used in class are confirmed by Pathway Career when you enquire.
Career paths
Examples of roles that use these skills. They are not a promise of a job.
- QA engineer
- Test automation engineer
- Junior SDET (software development engineer in test)
- Playwright automation engineer
- Quality analyst
- Test lead (with experience)
Questions about this course
Do I need to know how to code?
This outline assumes no coding experience: JavaScript and TypeScript are taught from the basics, and manual testers can build on what they already know. Entry requirements are confirmed by Pathway Career when you enquire.
Why Playwright and not Selenium?
Playwright is a newer tool with built-in waiting, support for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, and strong debugging with traces. Selenium is still widely used, and the ideas you learn here carry over to it.
Will AI replace testers?
AI can speed up drafting and routine checks, but it can also be confidently wrong. Testers who can judge risk, review results and design good tests remain essential. Module 9 shows how to work with AI safely.
Is manual testing included?
Module 1 covers test design, bug reporting and manual practice before any automation.
Which programming language is used?
TypeScript, with JavaScript where useful. Playwright also supports other languages, but they are not part of this outline. Pathway Career confirms the language when you enquire.
Will I need to pay for AI tools?
Some AI services charge by use. Pathway Career confirms which assistant the class uses, and who provides access, when you enquire.
